App hangs up when trying to delete files

I hadn't had this happen before, but as I was trying to delete 3,513 files from a folder, the app keeps hanging up at the calculating stage for as long as 2 hours before I stopped it via task manager (it said "not responding")

Are you deleting to the Recycle Bin or directly?

Does toggling the 'Via Windows Shell' setting help (it's near the delete button).
