Hard Link
Duplicate Cleaner Pro 4.0.1
Windows 10 64
Hello,
When (after search) want to generate hardlinks then window like in the attachment (external - i think) appears and nothing happens.
I waited several minutes - this window is like frozen (only "calculating").
When I cliked "x" on this window - the DC windows appears: Create Hard-links (Cancelled) & 1 file(s) have been Hard-linked.
But: no hard-link has been created.
Can somebody help me with this problem.
Best Regards NEMOSECOND.

Re: Hard Link
Are you Copying or Hard-linking?
Worked for me, a tiny scan, single file to link.
I saw no dialog like your screenshot?
Win7 x64.
What are the circumstances of your scan.
Anything odd about it?
Locations?
Permissions?
Likewise a copy worked too:
Seems the folder opened automatically?

Re: Hard Link
Maybe something here, Extremely slow file copying / moving / deleting?
And from that, seemingly there is some sort of similar dialog (your screenshot) in Win7, yet I have never in my life seen anything like that (though I don't typically use "Windows" functionalities).

I was working on win7 with earlier version of DC - there was no problem (the problem is maybe related to win version).
There is no problem with permissions - I have tested many variants (with folder in root of drive with everyone full access and only two files, even running DC with administrative privileges, and with removable drives).
In test with more then 2 group of files (f.e. X X, Y Y Y) in log is information that "1 file(s) have been Hard-linked." (but it isn't, because of my termination of external process window [see earlier attachment]).
It seems that to make hard-link DC calls external (native in windows) procedure, but in windows 10 it malfunctioning.
Best Regards, NEMOSECOND.

The same problem occurs with two files with size 2 byte each in one folder :-)therube wrote:Maybe something here, Extremely slow file copying / moving / deleting?

So, rather there is not similar problem in this testing environment.
The problem is with external procedure called in windows 10 environment.

Re: Hard Link
Confirmed - the hard linking in Duplicate Cleaner v4.01 isn't working in Windows 8 and 10 (freezing on first operation).
Thanks for the report - I will see if we can get a fix in for v4.0.2.

Re: Hard Link
1.
the hard link doesn't work for Duplicate Cleaner 4.0.1, the progress bar never move.
2.
there may be something wrong with hard link in win10.
i tried to use mklink /h to build hard link of some DOC files, and if i change the original files, the hard linked one will disappear.
but it works good with TXT files.
3.
would please add Symbolic link function?
it works well in win10.

Re: Hard Link
I also noticed that Duplicate Cleaner Pro Ver 4.0.1 does not work with the (hard) link option. However, this applies to several other programs, so I figure there could have been a change in MS Interfaces.
This is my picture on Windows 10 pro Version 14388 (aka release candicate for August 2), 64 Bit
- dupemerge (54) by Herman Schinagl shows hard links in the target dir twice for duplicates with option --list
- ln --enum by that author does show them
- windows explorer doesn's show either link target nor link count (in the details view when these columns are selected)
- windows explorer does show above data in the properties page for objects having junctions or hard links
- xyplorer doesn's show either link target nor link count (in the details view when these columns are selected)
- cmd.exe will not show the hard link attribute "L" both with dir and attrib commands
- everything.exe seems to be Junction-Aware, because it shows only one of the hardlinked files
- Nirsoft's freecommander does not show the attribute "L" (does/did it ever?)
Very probably the simple access to the file's attributes is not working, whereas programs using the MFT are (partially) working.
Don't we all love Microsoft-IT?

See what Everything 1.4.0.713b Beta gives you.- everything.exe seems to be Junction-Aware, because it shows only one of the hardlinked files
Nirsoft makes plenty of utilities, but freecommander is not one of them.Nirsoft's freecommander
Though he does have NTFSLinksView ;-).
Maybe there's a tidbit or so here, hardlinkshell: Frequently Asked Questions?
