Not everything new is better

Post by bitbucket »

I downloaded Duplicate Cleaner 3 a few days ago but I have found some irritating behavior in the new version which is making me wish I still had the setup file to fall back to version 2.

It used to be that each time I ran Duplicate Cleaner, the search paths listed under Scan Location were retained from the previous execution. Now, the search paths are cleared. It would be convenient to have these previous paths still listed. Anyone who would like to start with an empty list can always use the "Remove all from list" button beneath the list.

Then there's the "Exclude Zero Size Files from Duplicate list" under Search Criteria. It, too, doesn't retain it's previously set value. With Duplicate Cleaner 2, I had selected it once and it was then always on every time I ran Duplicate Cleaner. Now, I have to remember to check the option every time.

But what really makes me want to fall back to the previous version is the Selection Assistant. Previously, whenever I used the Selection Assistant, it opened to the "Select by text pattern" tab (which I nearly always wanted) and had the "Column Name" set to path (which I also wanted). And the value for "Pattern" retained its prior value. Now, I have to click "Selection Assistant", then "Select by text pattern" (remembering to verify the "Work only on currently selected rows" setting, which I usually want on, but not always), then set "Column Name" to "Path", and, finally, set the pattern. What was done with one click now takes four or five. This is something I have to do very frequently and is very time consuming.

Not only do "Column Name" and "Pattern" not retain their previous settings, the drop-down history for "Pattern" is cleared each time that I click on Selection Assistant, making this feature nearly useless.

And, why is the "Work only on currently selected rows" option not in the "Select by text pattern" window? If I failed to correctly set this before selecting "Select by text pattern", I can't go back to the previous window and change the setting. I have to close the Selection Assistant and start clicking everything again.

Possibly, I could convince you to update Duplicate Cleaner to retain set values each time the program is run, but I don't expect that you'll throw out the new Selection Assistant and restore the (in my opinion) better interface. Could I at least talk you into providing I link so I can download Duplicate Cleaner 2 again?

Your settings should be retained.

Settings are saved within %LOCALAPPDATA%/DigitalVolcano (or \Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Application Data\DigitalVolcano depending on OS) & sounds like they are not for you.

Possible permissions issue?

The dropdown & selection options, that would be a different issue.

Duplicate Cleaner should always remember all the settings, including paths. How are you using it? If you are using it in a portable manner (eg on a memory stick and moving between machines) then the settings won't be saved between machines. This behaviour does differ from v2.0. Otherwise, all the settings you mention should be saved between sessions as normal, and there must be some other issue.

We are looking at improving the Select by Text window for version 3.0.1, and making folder selection easier.
Note the window isn't modal, so you can keep it to one side (no need to close) and work on the duplicate list.
