Couple of bugs, suggestions and THANK YOU

Post by abrasion »

I have been looking for a replacement for Duplic8 for a long time, this program looks to fit the bill and I'm very likely to purchase a copy (depending on developer interaction in this forum primarily)

Here's my suggestions thus far.

After a scan is complete, when in the "Duplicate fodlers" tab
* Need a hotkey to select / mark each folder I want to delete (ideally spacebar) the mouse/right click method is a bit slow and clunky.
* On that note,..... there should be an indicator against the folder representing it's been selected.

After a scan is complete, and in the regular "duplicate files"
* When generally browsing the regular file list, a hotkey to Windows Explorer in the current folder location would be nice, maybe even holding down shift and double clicking on the file? (I know it sounds pedantic but it could really save time over using the mouse to do this)

When a scan is cancelled (for some reason) half way through.
* Showing what files were found would be nice, not neccessary however some tools do this (duplic8)

During scanning I would like the "Scan Location" tab to either be clickable or the Scan progress box to show me the paths it's searching. If this is too difficult, show me the drive letters it's working with (it's hard to explain why but I am running multiple instances for specific reasons and I just want to be sure I don't accidentally select the same disk twice and really thrash it / exponentially slow it down)

I've found an error where clicking on the largest folder in the "duplicate folders view" tab comes up with an error (sorry, I don't recall it, something about binary something or mathematical something? Like it couldn't calculate the amount of space / view the files)
(I will update this when I get more information!)

I had an error this morning when opening ""Exception: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.""
This also then spat out some kind of trial license error (only discovered the program yesterday) A reboot fixed it but it doesn't raise my confidence on the package.

Finally: the duplicate folder view is great, it's REALLY good - very few programs offer this, it's a HUGE timesaver over going through some mammoth list of files. While I can't code, I can say I like what you've done here and it's something I've wished I could find for years. Assuming the support for the product is good I intend to buy and tell anyone and everyone I know about it.

P.S I tried my hardest to track down the actual developer so I could email him direct, well hidden email address :/

Hi, glad you like things so far - I'll try and address your points:

Hotkey is a good idea - will look into this. The indicator is already on the to-do list! The Duplicate Folder browser is a new feature, and fairly unique, so we are always open to suggestions to improve it.

It's currently only viewable from the right-click context menu. However, a keyboard shortcut might be handy - in fact I think an open forum thread on keyboard shortcuts would be good in collecting suggestions - it's something that's often overlooked.

This was the behavior in earlier versions of DC. However, populating the duplicate list is also time consuming, and affects the speed of the cancel operation.

Good idea - there are plans to show more information in the scan box.

Hmm - it would be interesting to know the folder/group size. Possibly an overflow - this is usually easily fixable.

Ugh - This sounds like it is the third party licensing control throwing an error. Not had this before, but please let us know if it becomes a regular issue!

Hopefully will get more contact details up in the next website update, but you can use software (@) digitalvolcano.co.uk as a direct email address. Thanks!

I think I might be able to re-create this particular bug, I've got a copy of the precise text
"Error showing file list Arithmetic operation resulted in an overlflow"
I'm going to re-run a scan tonight and let you know.

You might not be so impressed when you find out why I wanted to email you (in a day or two, I'm quite busy @ the moment!) :(
Now, just one more thing, since you've covered most of my stuff positively here.
The duplicate folder function is great as mentioned but there's a ..design choice I think could do with tweaking, I'll try to explain

Let's say I have 2 identical folders, I know this for a fact.
"Folder 1" and "Folder 2"
Inside them is also "Subfolder 1" and "Subfolder 1" inside both the folders. (since they are after all, identical)

Now, if I add "Folder 1" and "Folder 2" to a search at the top (root) level the duplicate folder tool will only identify that "Subfolder 1" and "Subfolder 1" are identical, despite their root folders in reality being identical.
Therefore, if I want to identify possibly identical folders, I need to move them inside their own folder or scan the entire disk.

Does this make sense?

It doesn't seem to be including the root as part of the check, you are right. I'll will add this to the fix-list.

Managed to re-create the arithmetic operation bug again, I can save a copy of the directories if you like if you would find them handy for re-creating it.

Anything you could send would be handy - would be particularly interested in the total directory size.
thanks for this.

Managed to definitely recreate problem.
Only 5 files
Size: 2.27 GB (2,448,154,624 bytes)
Size on Disk: 2.27 GB (2,448,158,720 bytes)

File#1
467 MB (489,916,416 bytes)
467 MB (489,918,464 bytes)

#2
467 MB (490,008,576 bytes)
467 MB (490,008,576 bytes)

#3
465 MB (488,577,024 bytes)
465 MB (488,579,072 bytes)

#4
467 MB (489,811,968 bytes)
467 MB (489,811,968 bytes)

#5
467 MB (489,840,640 bytes)
467 MB (489,840,640 bytes)

If required, can compress and upload to some kind of site if required.
If these 5 files are in folder X
and then the same 5 files are in folder Y
both X and Y are under \TEST\ for example, bam problem reproduced.

Let me know what you need / like. P.S the forum isn't emailing me when replies occur, I'm having to log in and check a few times a day

Thanks for this, no need to email. Looks like an integer overflow (max size is 2,147,483,647) - will be able to fix this for the next update. Thanks again!

Happy to help.
We need to work on the duplicate files tab user interface soon, I've had some ideas which might be of use :)
