Selection assistant - won't allow shortest name

In selection assistant, I wish to select by shortest name. However, when I do so, no files are selected. What am I doing wrong?

If the file names in each group are equal length, nothing will be selected. Is that the case?

No, the file names are very different. The other selection criteria work well (older, newer, etc.), but the file name length criterion (longer or shorter) doesn't.
