Priority of Sorting

When searching for dupes under "Same Content" and the sort produces files with different file names...what is going on? Do I then manually sort further on the production of such a "Group" of files?

For example, if my search renders 6 files in a Group. However there are clearly two subsets with slightly varying file names. Do I assume they are all really identical and delete all but one of the files? Or is it possible that some other program (or file) draws also upon these files using one of the name variants? HP stores an incredibly large library of all kinds of extensions on this computer...and I do not even have an HP product! One example would be as follows:

1) hp201a.log
2) hp201b.log
3) hp201c.log

All are contained within a Group #14517 and all contain the same file date. Since my primary search was exclusively for "Same Content" how do I deal with these slightly varying file names? Some names are not even close but clearly DV perceives identical content and has grouped them together.

Thanks for comments!

If you search by 'Same Content' then all files within the same Group are identical (either by hash method or byte-to-byte).

Now depending on what options, if any, you have chosen as 'Additional Options' may change what shows, or does not show, as a "duplicate".

That is always a possibility.
And will always be under your discretion as to whether you should get rid of them or not.

So long as you used Same Content, the files are identical (to a very high degree of certainty).

Same Content also implies that their size would also have to be the identical.

Though their name & any other properties could be anything at all.

Likewise, just because a set of files have the same name, same size, & same date does not in any way imply identicality

Sorry...I should have told you that the hash is identical for each Group (each Group has it´s own unique hash). The only variable in the equation is in the file name. There are no other options chosen.

Since these files I am currently struggling with are all HP related and I have no HP products I suppose the minimal risk factor is further diminished. Thanks for the concise answer and assurance!

I personally find this a great forum, by the way!
