Selecting duplicates in the same folder with similar names

Post by Callistemon »

The Selection Assistant in Version 4 had a ["Copy of" style file names] option. Searching for “(2)” and “- Copy” can produce the same result in Version 5, but it would be even better if there was a mode that only selected files with those extensions if there was another file in the same folder that had the same beginning file name before the "(2)" or "- Copy". Sometimes searching and selecting "(2)" selects other files that do not have a duplicate in the same folder.

If Selection Assistant still allowed selections to be performed only on highlighted files, then searching for "(2)" would suffice when the highlighted batch is screened first by the user for any files with "(2)" that shouldn't be selected. Since it cannot work on only highlighted files anymore, then every unwanted selection with a "(2)" needs to be found and excluded if there are any in the entire list of duplicates.

Did you find that the search function also allows filtering to search results? That way you can search for something and then filter to it. The Selection Assistant will then work just on the filtered rows.

In the next update you can filter to selected rows, which will go towards replacing the Selection Assistant->Work on selected rows as in v4

The intended result is for only duplicates within the same folder and with "(2)" to be selected. The search function can search for "(2)" and filter to those results to exclude anything that does not contain "(2)", but the Selection Assistant doesn't have the ability to only select files that are duplicated within the same folder, so it still requires individual selection. Under the Search Criteria tab, there is a checkbox for "Ignore duplicate groups within the same folder" but nothing for the opposite, and it requires running the scan over again when specified from there. If the Selection Assistant had those options, the scan would not need to be run over again to apply. It could be a dropdown for "Duplicates within the same folder" or "Duplicates between different folders".

OK, I see.

From a new scan point of view does 'Same folder name' (match full) + 'Same drive' help?

Yes. Is it intended to be possible to have both "Same folder name" + "Match full folder name" and "Ignore duplicate groups within the same folder" checked at the same time? It may be intended to use "Ignore duplicate groups within the same folder" when using "Match depth from top", but when matching every folder level, the two check boxes are contradictory and one should be disabled.

"Same file name" does not match file extensions, even when "Ignore "Copy" part of filename" is turned off.
