We're pleased to announce that Duplicate Cleaner 4 has reached beta. This version has many new features, as well as a completely overhauled scan and delete engine.

A few of the new features:

• Find unique files
  Flag input folder(s) as a Master - Only files which duplicate the ones in the Master will be listed
  Flag input folder(s) as protected - you can't mark or remove from a protected folder

• Match by same file extension
  Match by same folder name (full path or to a specified depth)
  Size matching tolerance
  Date matching tolerance
  Exclude filter can now work on folder names

• Image Mode - Match by tags (Digitisted dates, comments, ImageUniqueID, etc)
  Image Mode - Match by closest distance (for geotagged images)
  Audio Mode - Match by more tags including TrackNo, year, genre, comment, AmazonID, MusicBrainzID, AcoustID, etc
  Selection Assistant - Undo last selection
  "Search within list" feature

There's lots of other changes to discover as well.

How about installation & settings - both on disk & in the Registry?

Should a 4.0b install be put into a new directory, or overwrite 3.27?

Will it use existing version 3.27 settings?
Or option to use existing?
Or does it store its setting in its own structures, separate from 3.27, or... ?

This is how it was between Free & Pro, the last time:

It's a separate download/installation to Free (they can be installed in different folders and don't share the same settings/database file)

Settings will be in the database (stored in the user's appdata/roaming folder) - as with version 3, it doesn't use the registry. It uses a different database file name to version 3 so won't override the settings - you can use the two versions concurrently.

The installer hasn't been built yet, so I can't confirm about the upgrade path - best to install in a different directory.

Fixed in Beta2 :-).
But...

Tried with both a Duplicate Folders List exported from b1, & Duplicate Files List exported from b2.


... I wonder if its permissions ... ?


And it seems after hitting this error, other errors ensue.
As in I then Loaded a Profile, but when I told it to Scan, I got an error again (specifics escape me at the moment).
I had to quit & restart Duplicate Cleaner.

You can't import the duplicate folder lists - they are export-only and will give an error.

EDIT: It looks like importing the duplicate folder list (or any incompatible csv) caused the error, which threw out everything else because it didn't clean up properly after itself. If you start again and just import the file CSV export it should be OK.
