Long deletion

Post by njjubb »

Hi I did a duplicatecleaner search of several hard drives attached to my computer and found numerous files to delete. I successfully marked all the files for deletion and started the delete files action. I am trying to delete 61807 files out of 453 GB scanned. I started the deletion yesterday and now after 24 hours the progress bar is only showing about 15%. I have a thinkpad computer T400..so it's a decent processor, etc. Why is this taking so long? By the way, as a future enhancement it would be nice to see a better progress indicator (like actually showing files being deleted) and an estimated time. Is this normal it would take so long? At this rate I will have to leave it running for 5 days. Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

How are you deleting?
To Recycle Bin, bypassing the Bin, some other means?

(Recycle Bin has limited capacity [maximum size & probably inefficiencies when the number of directory entries grows too large?], I don't know specifics offhand, & could be purging itself in order to make room for more, only to have to purge itself ...)

Otherwise, IMO, it is often better to break a problem down into smaller parts. Like if you know a particular directory tree, a much smaller subset of your 450GB, with a smaller anticipated number of dups, would be easier to handle. Then pick another tree ... Get most of the crud removed in a more efficient way, then have a go with a wider birth.

I'm deleting to the recycle bin. I cleared the recycle bin and then watched it and only about 3 files per minute were being sent to the bin from duplicate cleaner. I've left it running for 4 days now and am still only about at 30%... Ugh. I understand your suggestion, just wish this method would have been a lot faster.
